What do we mean by Worship?
Worship is giving God what he deserves—what he is due. We
were made to worship God. That’s what life is all
about. To be human is to be called to worship. And that
is what a church is. A church is a gathering of those
called out by God to worship him from among those who do not
wish to worship God. We were made for God. Not every
one now knows him or wishes to recognize his authority. When
he gives us a new heart he makes it so that we are able to
appreciate him, and have the desire to know, worship, and
serve him. Every week he has set apart a day that is his
so that we may publicly worship him. This means that we
gather in public to give him ourselves in a way that we
surrender to no other. In worship we express our
allegiance to Jesus as our Lord and our God. He has given
us in his Word the way we are to express this worship. We
try to follow the simple way found in the Bible. This
worship follows the pattern taught in the Reformation. Grace
is its governing principle and simplicity its hallmark. When
anyone is trusting in Christ alone as his saviour, that
worshipper is a priest of God applying to himself by faith
what is ministered to him of the ordinances of God by the
pastor who conducts the service, whether it is the preaching
of the Word, the administration of the Sacraments, or the
offering up of Prayer. You may have already experienced
many different “styles” of worship in Protestant churches. Perhaps
you are ready to leave behind the bizarre, trivial, and merely
entertaining. We do not try to entertain, nor merely
educate, nor help you achieve self-realization. We do not
perform miracles or speak in tongues. In worship we
actually meet with the real God. He speaks through his
Word preached; he is praised in song; he is called upon in
prayer. It is a serious matter and we seek to enter his
presence with reverence. God is worth it. He is more
valuable than anything else in life. We owe him that
recognition and appreciation. Won't you come and worship
him with us?
